As someone who grew up reading comic books and fight scenes, I love the first illustration. Let me say that first. Now, the shading on both illos is lovely; you can definitely see light source, and shading gives a well-rounded feel to any illustration.
The movement in the first illustration is very in-your-face. Our Intrepid Heroes are fighting for their lives, obviously, and maybe they'll have a chance to win if they can get into some of those buildings. The background suits the illustration very well, and I love the mountain and the castle, both giving the impression of height and balance.
The second illustration is such fun! I already told you how much I liked the background characters; each of them appears to have their own life and it's almost like a photograph snapped somewhere. The movement in this is a lot of fun, full of teasing and good cheer. The light makes me think it's mid-morning, maybe; it doesn't feel bright enough for afternoon.
